Cornwall has a lot going for it: cream teas, cracking cider and rows upon rows of beautiful waves which are perfect for surfing! Cornwall, especially around the Newquay area, is the home of UK surfing for many reasons. Here are a few of our favourites to convince you to come have a go at Watergate Bay with Westcountry Surf School!

Stunning Scenery

We’re a little in love with Watergate Bay and we don’t care who knows it! With two miles of sandy beaches, brisk cliff top paths and rugged coastal landscapes as far as the eye can see, we’re not sure if there is any better scenery to surround yourself with as you learn to surf. Here’s the view from our office if you don’t believe us.

Consistency

Due to its location on the island of Britain, Cornwall often gets some seriously good waves. It’s exposed enough for waves to be consistent but sheltered enough for beginner-friendly conditions. Watergate Bay in particular is the perfect mix of conditions for regular waves. That’s why we’re based here!

Family friendly

With a range of beach-side facilities, lifeguards on duty in the summer months and sheltered conditions, Watergate Bay is ideal for families looking to take to the water together. Or if not, it’s the perfect picnic spot to watch your loved ones learn to surf without getting your feet wet!

Connected

Watergate Bay is only three miles away from Newquay and easily accessible by road. It is close enough to Newquay for you to explore one of the nation’s favourite seaside towns but out of the way enough for a real feeling of escape.

History

There is evidence that surfers have been making the most of Watergate since the 1920s, but it wasn’t until the 1950s and the explosion of American fuelled surf culture that surfers in Watergate Bay became a regular sight. Pro tips

Every year Watergate Bay sees its fair share of professional surfers as the English National Surfing Championships are held here in May. The final of the Rip Curl Grom Search also lands on our shore every year. These guys could be surfing anywhere, yet Watergate Bay keeps them coming back for more!
